Bullion

The term bullion is commonly used to refer to gold and silver which is at least 99.5% and 99.9% pure in the form of bars or ingots. Bullion is often kept as a reserve asset by governments and central banks.

The minimum investment size to invest in gold or silver bullion has been set as low as INR 1000/- in the form of a systematic investment plan.

Gold or Silver can be purchased in physical or paper form. With regards, to the physical form, one can purchase it as jewellery, coins or bars. With regards to the paper form, one can purchase it in the form of gold exchange-traded funds or gold ETFs.

What you need for the latter is a trading account with a stockbroker and a Demat account. One may either buy in lump sums or SIPs.

During times of economic despair or international conflicts such as war etc., investors rely on gold as a safe investment for the long term. This makes gold-based ETFs and mutual funds the safest investment for investors to add to their portfolios.
